Equipment with Abandonment Issues

There are times when it might seem like a good idea to sideline equipment that's no longer in use and worry about it later.  Afterall, there are situations where it might seem more cost-effective to do so.  Dick Willard, in his article Abandon-in-Place Must End, talks about the risks involved with this type of practice and how it could prove to be much costlier in the long run. He provides some specific examples where this strategy failed, and, in some cases, even endangered workers.  He also provides some tips for dealing with aboveground and underground piping and special precautions engineers should take to avoid problems with temporarily bypassed equipment.
