The Zoll AED Plus is an automated external defibrillator. This is truly an amazing device that uses audible speech commands and viewable signals to lead the rescuer through a resuscitation cycle that may include defibrillation and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The unit utilizes the ZOLL Rectilinear Biphasic Defibrillation waveform, and functions in either adult or pediatric modes. The Zoll AED Plus embraces both adult and pediatric defibrillation electrode pads, and as a matter of course regulates the defibrillation output based on the type of electrode pads attached. Following the attachment of the electrodes to a patient's chest, the defibrillator evaluates the electrocardiographic (ECG) rhythm of the heart and decides if an electrical shock is adviseable. When a shock is necessary, the AED charges and provides visual and verbal commands during the process. It really doesn't get any easier than that.

Zoll has devised the AED Plus with nervous rescuer's in mind. When faced with a heart stopping situation the Zoll AED Plus along with someone who is willing to help, makes the difference in patient survival. The soothing voice guides the rescuer through the crisis with simple step by step instructions. One of the most appreciated features of the AED is the ability to correctly distingush how much effort is required to compress the chest during CPR. Every person has a different weight and physical ability. The standard measurement of chest compression quality is not amount of force but the depth of the compression. The Real CPR Help® technology in ZOLL’s CPR-D Padz® includes a hand-placement locator, an accelerometer and a processing algorithm that works to measure vertical displacement in space as each compression occurs. Nothing is left to guess work. When pressed into action, every major decision is made for the rescuer leaving little room for error.

In a real world situation where somebody has suddenly collapsed, you'd hook up the electrodes to the bare chest of the patient and the AED starts reading the cardiac and pulmonary rhythms. After a short analysis, the AED will advise whether or not a shock is necessary. Many people are not aware that in half of all rescue attempts, NO shock is advised for the patient. The AED also aids in performing CPR.

Some of the advice capabilities of the AED Plus during CPR include:

  • Pushing too hard or not hard enough, the AED Plus will let you know when to make an adjustment.
  • When compressions are correct, the AED will tell you "Good Compressions."
  • Not pushing fast enough? A visual indicator will guide you to the correct rate.
  • It also measures the intensity of each compression in real-time.
  • If compressions are stopped and still necessary, the AED will continue to alert you audibly.

One Size Fits All - Design Wizard by Zoll
Because each person is different, Zoll has designed a one piece electrode to accommodate anatomical variation. Based on extensive research, the CPR-D Padz meets the anthropometric chest characteristics of 99% of the population. If needed, the lower (apex) electrode can be separated and adjusted to accommodate the remaining 1% of the population.

Simplified Placement - Creates confidence and calm during a crisis
Affixing two separate electrode pads to the patient’s bare chest can be confusing to a lay rescuer. Zoll’s CPR-D Padz simpliflies this step by guiding the placement of red crosshairs at the center of the patient’s nipple line. Once in place, the hand-locator and the two electrode pads fall naturally into optimal position for both defibrillation and CPR.

Five-Year Shelf Life - That is a long time
All AED electrodes transmit defibrillating electricity into the patient through metal contact patch with a salt-infused gel applied to the chest of the patient. However, over time the salt in the gel will corrode the metal and eventually compromise the electrode's functionality. Zoll’s novel electrode design includes a special barrier that prevents most corrosion for five years or more.

Batteries Can Be Replaced At Your Local Shopping Center - No Expensive Batteries to worry about
The Zoll AED Plus Defibrillator uses Duracell CR123 lithium batteries (10) which are readily available in most retail stores. They are good for 5 years in the unit. The batteries coupled with the 5 year shelf life of the CPR-D Padz make cost of ownership of the Zoll AED Plus defibrillator very attractive.
