Spectronic 20

The Spectronic 20 is one of the most commonly used spectrophotometers in the lab. Originally manufactured by Bausch and Lomb in 1954, it was later purchased by Milton Roy, and is now owned by Thermo Scientific who produces a new version which is for sale today. The price for purchasing a used Spec 20 can range greatly; with very old Bausch and Lomb Spectronic 20’s selling for $30-$50 to as high as $200 depending on the condition. Newer Milton Roy or Thermo Spectronic 20+ spectrophotometers will fetch better dollars and can range from a few hundred dollars to the low $2000 range.

Bausch & Lomb Spectronic 20

The Spectronic 20 was introduced by Bausch & Lomb in 1954. This single beam spectrophotometer is well known for its enduring design and reliability. It can be used to determine what is in a solution by taking a spectrum (the pattern of how much light is absorbed at each particular wavelength vs. wavelength). More commonly it is used to determine the concentration of substances in solution by comparing the amount of light absorbed at a particular wavelength as compared to a standard of known concentration.

Milton Roy Spectronic 20D+

  • Direct computer and printer interfacing
  • Easy-to-read digital display
  • Concentration mode

Same basic features as Spectronic® 20+ except 0%T adjustment has been eliminated. LED display displays readings in 0-100%T, 0-1.95A and 0-1999C (with a factor value of 0.1-1000). Concentration mode eliminates need to construct standard curves for each analysis. Simply set concentration with a standard or input the factor and read the concentration of the unknown sample on the display. Built-in print control. A single cable connects the unit to a

Thermo Scientific SPECTRONIC 20+ and 20D+

The SPECTRONIC 20 name has become synonymous with longevity, reliability, and quality. It remains a key tool in the classroom for teaching future chemists and a proven ‘workhorse’ instrument for the quantitative analysis of wastewater, foods and beverages, and more.
