The latest advances in Cryogenic Grinding from SPEX SamplePrep

SPEX SamplePrep LLC is pleased to announce the next generation in Freezer/Mills, the 6970 Enclosed Freezer/Mill® (6970 EFM). This completely remodeled product based on the well-established 6870 Freezer/Mill® employs a unique design, including a totally enclosed liquid nitrogen (LN) auto-fill system with external loading of sample vials.
During development of the new Enclosed Freezer/Mill customer feedback was used to identify key features for incorporation in the new design. Foremost was the need for increased sample throughput. With that in mind, the Enclosed Freezer/Mill was developed with the option of either single or dual grinding chambers. With dual chambers, the 6970 EFM offers an 8 fold increase in sample output compared to a single position 6770 Freezer/Mill. The single chamber 6970 model includes a pre-cooling chamber, allowing additional samples to be cooled while the grinding chamber is in operation.
As the name suggests, the Liquid Nitrogen (LN) reservoir of the 6970 EFM is fully enclosed. Liquid nitrogen is introduced into the reservoir through an auto-fill system, which is supplied as standard with the unit. The grinding chambers, which are positioned in the LN reservoir for cooling and grinding, are accessed through external gates. Thus, true cryogenic grinding is achieved, while eliminating user exposure to LN. The 6970 EFM retains the unique classic design of magnetically powered impactors, preventing the possibility of mechanical failure associated with adapted ball-mills.
The entire system is controlled by a new color touch screen interface that can store up to 10 programs for rapid process replication and consistency. The user is able to control both grinding chambers for independent operation with different protocols, depending on sample type.
