MEFFA (Multi-Element Fine Fraction Analysis) is an innovative and cost-effective soil/sediment geochemistry method developed in Finland. The MEFFA method consists of two stages: Sample Collection and Express Analysis with handheld XRF in the Field: In the first stage, soil and sediment samples are collected and analyzed in a field using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for express assessment of gold pathfinder and base metals. The results of the express XRF assay allow for better planning of further prospecting project implementation and possibly redirecting of sampling. At this stage, our GERDA automated sampler can assist with routine pXRF operations, improving efficiency and accuracy. Fine Fraction Separation Using Wet Sieving in a Field or in the Lab and MEFFA Analysis Using LA+ICP MS: In the second stage, to analyze samples for gold and other elements with high detection limits on XRF, the fine fraction is separated using wet sieving in a field or in the lab, and then analyzed using the MEFFA method with Laser Ablation and ICP-MS. This method offers several advantages, including high sensitivity, rapid analysis, and the ability to analyze a wide range of elements in the samples. -Why fine fraction? The fine fraction of soil is considered better for analysis for several reasons: Higher concentration of valuable elements: Fine fractions, such as those passing through a 2 µm sieve, can produce reproducible and reliable results with higher concentrations of valuable elements. This is because the fine fraction is enriched in elements that are often of interest in mineral exploration and environmental monitoring studies. Better representation of local conditions: In residual terrains, the finer fractions may be more effective in capturing the local geochemical signature, as they are less influenced by transported materials. In covered terrains, fine fractions may be more representative of the local underlying rocks, as most materials do not represent the local underlying rocks and only a mobile dispersion signature is observed. – Why MEFFA? The MEFFA technique offers several benefits compared to traditional methods, making it an innovative and cost-effective soil/sediment geochemistry method. Some of the key advantages of the MEFFA technique include: Cost-Effectiveness: The method excludes any chemical preparation of samples, reducing complexity and costs. It offers reliable and affordable analytical complexes, making it affordable for junior exploration companies High Sensitivity: MEFFA provides high sensitivity due to direct analysis of the material, with no leaching or solutions involved in the sample preparation Environmental Friendliness: The technique is environmentally friendly and safe, as it does not involve the use of acids or any chemicals in sample preparation Ease of Sample Collection and Transportation: MEFFA allows for the analysis of much smaller samples, making sample collection and transportation easier No Special Facilities Required: The method does not require special facilities for sample preparation, adding to its cost-effectiveness and practicality Rapid Analysis: MEFFA enables high-productive field sampling and rapid sample preparation and assaying, making it a time-efficient approach for soil/sediment geochemistry analysis
