Purge and Trap

Purge and Trap is an analytical technique used to extract and concentrate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from liquid or solid matrices before gas chromatographic analysis. This method enhances the detection sensitivity for VOCs, achieving detection limits as low as parts per trillion (ppt).The process involves purging the sample with an inert gas, typically helium or nitrogen, at a flow rate of 40-50 mL/min. The VOCs are stripped from the sample matrix and captured on a sorbent trap maintained at a low temperature (around 25°C). The purge time usually ranges from 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the sample and the target analytes.Once the VOCs are trapped, the sorbent is rapidly heated to 250-300°C, desorbing the concentrated analytes into the gas chromatograph for analysis. The Purge and Trap technique is highly efficient, recovering more than 95 percent of most VOCs, and is widely used in environmental analysis, water quality testing, and food safety to detect trace levels of contaminants.
